Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can non-STOYs attend the conference?

Absolutely. This conference is open to all educators and stakeholders.

Q: What is the dress for the conference? What should I pack?

Our service day (July 15) is casual dress. We suggest business attire for session days and the Day on the Hill. For our receptions, you will see most attendees wearing cocktail dresses to business-casual wear.

We also recommend that you bring layers to wear inside. Summer air conditioning can bring a chill to the conference room air! Make sure to bring dancing shoes for the receptions and walking shoes to explore the beauty of our nation’s capital.

Q: If I am driving, what is the cost of parking?

NNSTOY has 15 50% off parking vouchers. Vouchers will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. Please see the NNSTOY registration table for a voucher. The Westin City Center normally charges $59/night for parking.

Q: What if I have food allergies?

Please indicate this in your registration on our conference EventBrite page. Prior to each meal, it will be your responsibility to let the hotel staff know of your needs.

Q: What is the cut-off date for the room block at the Westin City Center?

The room block rate of $159 will end on June 6, 2017 at 5pm EST. NNSTOY’s room block covers July 14 – 19.  The rate to stay overnight on July 19th after Day on the Hill is $209. Room block rates are first come, first serve, so be sure to book your room early! Click here to find information on booking your hotel room.

Q: Can I bring my family?

Absolutely! Though many of our events are just for conference attendees, there are many free activities in Washington, D.C., to keep families busy. Our hotel is also located within walking distance to great historical sites and adventures. Your family may forget that you came with them on this trip! We ask that you do not bring your family to events where meals are provided. Once details for our social outing are secured, we will let you know whether families are invited to attend.

Q: Will I have time to do some sight-seeing?

The location of the conference is near many wonderful sights. Sightseeing is encouraged in the evenings after the receptions. The Day on the Hill on July 19 will be an incredible opportunity to see a different perspective of the Capitol Building.

Though there is no specific time designated for sightseeing, we do encourage attendees to take full-advantage of the every conference opportunity. If you are able to arrive a day early, stay a day later, or snag a moment here are some recommendations: https://washington.org/things-do-washington-dc

“I am not a travel agent, but happy to give my advice. I highly recommend a monument tour at night or watching the sunrise from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial! “ Daniele Massey ([email protected]).

Q: How close is the conference hotel to Union Station?

About 2 miles. Claire Underwood could jog it in under 20 minutes…so can you! (Maybe not with luggage…)

Q: Does the hotel have free airport shuttles?

No, but there are Super Shuttles for about $14/person from Reagan and $37/person from Dulles. Call ahead to make your Super Shuttle reservation (they also have deals for more than 2 people traveling together). You can find out more on transportation to the hotel here.

Q: What kind of weather should I expect for Washington, D.C. in mid-July?

Complete hellish humidity and sun surface-like temperatures; remember, it’s a swamp.

Q: How far is the hotel from the Metro? Which line?

The McPherson Metro station is ⅕ of a mile from the hotel. More information on getting to the hotel is here.

Q: What services are available for special needs and requests?

If you need any special services or requests, please contact our Manager of Administrative Services, Lauren Cantell at [email protected] She will notify the hotel of your needs and ensure your needs are best accommodated during the conference.

Q: Is there funding to help with registration or travel costs?

Not as of now, but if you are a sponsor who is reading this, please let us know! We are always looking for creative ways to support the learning of great teachers. Please see our conference page for sponsorship opportunities.

NNSTOY members will have the opportunity to submit their names to be entered into a raffle for a conference scholarship of $1,000. This scholarship helps cover costs for conference attendance. NNSTOY does not provide any assistance for its members or other attendees to attend the conference. We suggest reaching out to your state education department for options they may provide in covering costs for attendance.

Q: What is the cancellation policy?

Because conference numbers are due June 30 to our conference hotel, we cannot provide a reimbursement after June 30. NNSTOY is happy to reimburse your conference ticket before June 30 if an issue arises.

Q: Can I advertise in the program? Is there vendor space?

We are always looking for sponsors and collaborators. Please click here to see the sponsorship options, many of which include the opportunity for vendor space/tables.

Q: How do I register? Are there different rates?

You can register by clicking here. There you will find different rates for early bird registration, retired members, single day passes, non-member session leaders, and sponsors. Helpful hint: Register soon if you want to save money with our early bird rate!

Q: Will there be food or drinks available? Can I bring my own?

We provide breakfast, lunches, afternoon breaks and appetizers every day of our conference, as well as appetizers and drinks at our two evenings receptions. If you have dietary restrictions, you will have the chance to indicate this in your EventBrite registration.

Q: Can I attend for just a session?

Though you can’t attend for just a session, you can attend for just a day! Disclaimer: we think that once you are in one session, you will never want to leave.

Q: What are the key deadlines I should know about?

The hotel room block ends June 6 at 5pm EST.

Q: What kind of opportunities will there be for networking?

Plenty! One of the goals of this conference is to network great educators and stakeholders. There will be networking opportunities between sessions, during the evening activities and receptions, and the Unconference. So bring your business cards—it’s time to mix and mingle!

Q: Are there group discounts?

No, there are not.

Q: I’m a presenter. What do I need to know?

We will be in touch throughout conference planning, but we are happy to address specific presenter concerns and provide you with feedback and coaching for your presenter sessions. Please contact Joe Fatheree at [email protected] for details on this opportunity.

Make sure to have enough materials and handouts on hand for your session. You will receive an email with estimated participant size, as well as any additional requests you have for Audio/Visual or supplies.

Q: I’m presenting. Do I need to register?

Yes! You will see the opportunity to register as a presenter. If you are a non-state teacher of the year or a keynote speaker, your registration is free.

Q: I’m presenting. Does my guest need to register?

Yes, but not for the complimentary rate! We will need your registration for meal numbers. We also want to ensure they receive all the updates, materials, and communications leading up to the conference.

Q: I’m presenting. Am I invited to the social outing?

Come along! We welcome all attendees.

Q: Is there a contact person assigned to me if I have questions?

Absolutely! We are here for you. Please contact Joe Fatheree at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Q: Will I have an opportunity to meet the amazing Michael Dunlea from NJ?

Yes, there is a sign-up list with time slots already started. (Note: NNSTOY humor!)

Q: Do sessions fill up? Will I need to register for them to reserve a seat?

Attendees do not sign up for individual sessions at our conference; you decide which sessions you would like to attend once you are at the conference. Sessions are available on a first come, first served basis.

Q: Are there any pre-conference materials I should read or become familiar with?

To join our conference mailing list, please sign up on our conference page. We will email important information and details leading up to the conference.

Q: How can I find out if anyone else from my state is going? Are there groups carpooling from Northeastern states?

We are happy to put you in touch with other attendees who have registered from your state.
