NNSTOY Statement on President Obama’s Testing Action Plan

October 24, 2015

The National Network of State Teachers of the Year (NNSTOY) welcomes the announcement by President Obama and his administration regarding a significant shift in the way in which we utilize student assessments.  For the past three years, NNSTOY members – State and National Teachers of the Year and Finalists – have engaged in a series of conversations with President Obama, Education Secretary Arne Duncan, and Senior Administration officials regarding the appropriate use of student testing. We are most grateful that our voices were heard.

In November, NNSTOY, with our study partners EdCounsel and Clowder Consulting, will release the findings from our study of state and consortia student summative assessments. We are excited to share these findings with the field.

As expert teachers, NNSTOY members strongly believe in the power of assessment.  We also believe in accountability.  Both are integral parts of our profession; but they must be developed and used appropriately.  We stand ready to work with states and districts as they embrace the President’s call to rethink the amount and type of assessments that we give to our students.
