Dyane Smokorowski

Secretary, Kansas State Teacher of the Year 2013

Dyane Smokorowski

In her 17 years in education, Dyane Smokorowski has taught middle school language arts in the Wichita, Renwick and Andover school districts in a project-based classroom focusing on critical thinking, communication, global collaboration and creativity while encompassing digital citizenship components. Mrs. Smoke, as her students know her, believes in a true 21st century classroom that fosters skills in communication, planning, research and service learning. She wants her students to develop a love for literature, writing, public speaking and technology, but also to understand how to use that love and passion to advance their own future as well as that of the greater community. While teaching at Andover Middle School, Smokorowski was identified as the 2013 Kansas Teacher of the Year, a prestigious honor recognized at the national level for excellence in teaching.

In addition to her teaching duties, Smokorowski has served in a teacher leader role in both the Renwick and Andover schools as a K-12 Instructional Technology Coach. This role allows her to mentor peer educators in designing their own high quality lessons and classroom experiences focused on collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and communication. While serving in this role, Smokorowski was recognized on the national level as a Top 20 to Watch Educational Technology Leader from the National School Boards Association for her innovative solutions to support high-quality, 21st century instruction in classrooms both locally and globally.
