Paid Opportunity: Learning Heroes
This is an opportunity for teachers to share their experiences engaging with families of children with learning differences (children diagnosed with or suspected to have challenges with reading, writing, or math; executive function; and/or attention, auditory, or visual processing). The national nonprofit Learning Heroes is leading this work, which uses research into parent and educator mindsets to inform tools and resources to help educators, service providers, and advocates communicate with families about how to further advocate for their children when they suspect or determine that they have a learning difference.
Learning Heroes has just completed new educator research on this topic and is looking for a few teachers to reflect on the research findings and share their stories with peers to help inspire more attention and action. With any teachers who are interested, we would set up a call to share the research findings, hear the teacher’s reactions and reflections on their experiences serving families of children who learn differently, and discuss whether they would feel comfortable creating a short video sharing their perspective. Learning Heroes will provide all the support needed to produce the video and will provide a $150 stipend to teachers who participate in a video in recognition of their time.
Project Background:
Decades of research has demonstrated the urgent need to further support families and educators in teaming up in support of student learning and well-being. In spring 2023, in partnership with the Oak Foundation and Edge Research, Learning Heroes released The Parent Journey: Cracking the Code for Families of Children with Learning Differences, to better understand the perceptions and experiences of parents of children who learn differently. In order to make the research actionable, we created a playbook - Helping Crack the Code: A Playbook for Educators, Service Providers, and Advocates - which highlights opportunities for supporting families as they navigate their child’s learning journey. In spring 2024, Learning Heroes conducted more research with teachers to understand the educator perspective on engaging with families of children who learn differently. We will be updating the Playbook and releasing a new suite of tools, including teacher videos, later this summer.

Mount Holyoke’s Leading Beyond the Classroom webinar series kicking off January 30th, 2024!

We would love you to join us for the Leading Beyond the Classroom webinar series presented by Mount Holyoke’s Teacher Leadership Program! This series is designed for anyone who is considering a shift in their role in the coming years or is hoping to amplify their impact on the teaching profession.
The webinars will be held on the last Tuesday of the month beginning January 30, 2024 with Maddie Fennell, 2007 Nebraska Teacher of the Year speaking about union involvement and organizational leadership at 7:00 EST/6:00 CST. On March 26, 2024, Michael Lawrence-Riddell, Mount Holyoke alum, will speak to developing anti-racist curricula work, followed by 2014 Texas Teacher of the Year Monica Washington on May 28, 2024 speaking about advocacy. Subsequent webinars will take place in July, September, and November, with featured speakers to be announced in the coming months.
Mount Holyoke’s Teacher Leadership Program will be offering the Leading Beyond the Classroom Institute beginning in January of 2025. This 18-month institute is a lighter version of our two-year Masters in Teacher Leadership. The Leading Beyond the Classroom webinar series will provide insight into future career trajectories the institutes can help prepare you for.

The We Are America Project
Are you an 8th - 12th grade English, history, civics, or humanities teacher?
Will you join us in creating a new student-led dialogue around identity?
The We Are America Project works with young people across the country to define what it means to be American — and to spark a new national conversation about American identity today led by the next generation.
The We Are America Project is led by Lowell High School teacher Jessica Lander and fourteen of her former students, who together published the books We Are America and We Are America Too in 2019. They went on to launch a national project working with teachers and students across the country. Across a school year the We Are America team works with a cohort of teachers, providing curriculum, support and monthly professional development, supporting teachers as they help their students tell their personal stories of American identity. At the end of the year students' stories are published in a book and featured on the project's website.
The We Are America Project is opening applications NOW for its 5th cohort of We Are America Teaching Fellows! (Application closes mid August).

I am the co-author of the upcoming book, The Advocate Educator's Handbook: Creating Schools Where Transgender and Non-Binary Students Thrive, scheduled to be published globally January 16, 2024. Based on over 50 interviews, The Advocate Educator reflects the experience of educators, students, leaders, and other experts. It provides K-12 educators, school and district leaders, teacher preparation programs and other adult allies with a framework ( Educate-Affirm-Include-Disrupt) and resources to ensure they are fully equipped to serve transgender and non-binary students. This is the first book of its kind from the world’s largest education publisher– and we hope it will find its way to all the places it is needed! We are especially honored because the forward is written by the inimitable Dr. Peggy Brookins, CEO of the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards and former member of President Obama’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans.

My name is Vanessa Ford (she/her). I am an award-winning educator (PAEMST 2015) and author who happens to be the parent of a wonderful transgender child. My children’s book, Calvin, won the 2022 Lambda Literary Award for Best Children’s or Middle-Grade Book and I was a classroom teacher for 14 years in DC Public Schools and have continued to work in the field. My family’s advocacy has been featured in the New York Times, Washington Post, Boston Globe, New York Magazine and NPR. I was a founding member of The Human Rights Campaign’s Parents for Transgender Equality Council and sat for 2 years on the board of the National Center for Transgender Equality. Rebecca Kling (she/her) is my amazing co-author. Rebecca is a nationally-known transgender activist and advocate for equal rights. She is the co-owner of the social impact consulting firm Better World Collaborative and previously served as the Education Programming Director at the National Center for Transgender Equality. Rebecca is also currently on the leadership team of Camp Aranu’tiq, a camp for transgender and gender variant youth, and she taught middle and high school theater for years. Her advocacy has been featured in the Washington Post, the Guardian, and elsewhere.

I hope this message finds you thriving this summer. I'm writing today to request your assistance in what I think is an extremely worthwhile undertaking (of course I do--I'm the one undertaking it). What I need won't take long, so please read on.
This year I'm seeking to create profiles on each and every state regarding how they approach Holocaust, genocide, and human rights education, and there are two important ways that you could assist me with that. One would be to help me collect the data for the state in which you live/teach. If that is of interest to you, please reach out to me at mgudgel@csm.edu.
The other way that you might assist me would simply be to take the short survey linked below, and to share it as widely as possible. If everyone on this list takes the survey I'd have a robust sample to work with, and if everyone on this list sent it to their colleagues, exponentially more so. The survey covers a lot of ground fast and can be completed in four to seven minutes. Your responses are, of course, invaluable to me.

Host a free local screening of Oscar-nominated documentary, Fire of Love
Together with National Geographic Films, Picture Motion is helping educators, scientists, and more bring the Oscar-nominated documentary, Fire of Love, from director Sara Dosa, to communities around the country through free local screenings, with the goal of further inspiring students and youth to explore STEM education and careers.
Fire of Love shares the extraordinary story Katia and Maurice Krafft, who loved two things — each other and volcanoes. For two decades, the daring French volcanologist couple roamed the planet, chasing eruptions and documenting their discoveries. Ultimately, they lost their lives in a 1991 volcanic explosion, leaving a legacy that forever enriched our knowledge of the natural world. Director Sara Dosa and the filmmaking team fashion a lyrical celebration of the intrepid scientists’ spirit of adventure, drawing from the Kraffts’ spectacular archive. FIRE OF LOVE tells a story of primordial creation and destruction, following two bold explorers as they venture into the unknown, all for the sake of love.
As a part of our impact campaign, we will be creating a discussion guide and setting up free grassroots screenings of the film around the country, with the hopes of bringing the film to students, educators, scientists, and others who are passionate and/or curious about the STEM fields, and for those who this film will further inspire and educate.

Extra Yard for Teachers Summit
- The College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation hosts the Extra Yard for Teachers Summit as a way to inspire and empower teachers each year in the host city. Past speakers and presenters have included Miguel Cardona, U.S. Secretary of Education, Condoleezza Rice, former US Secretary of State; Charles Best, founder of DonorsChoose.org; Desmond Howard, College Football ESPN Analyst, Leon Bridges and Lauren Daigle, Grammy Award winning artists, Eddie B, former teacher turned comedian, and many more. The Summit includes sessions to provide professional development, entertain, and celebrate attendees.
- The day offers virtual and in person high energy Professional Development presented by Get Your Teach On (Hope and Wade King Bios). The event also offers all in attendance the chance to win giveaways from partners, sponsors, and CFP champ weekend events.

Teacher of the Year Mathematics Educators
Looking to interview Teachers of the Year (TOYs) who are mathematics teachers able to talk about the decline of the NAEP scores and what can be done to improve the quality of teaching and learning specifically for Black students. The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) is the network of Black newspapers. We are currently interviewing teachers who work with predominantly Black students in minority communities.
