Lee Ann Stephens, Minnesota State Teacher of the Year 2007

I currently advocate for high school students of Mexican and African descent who take IB/AP/Honors courses.

My advocacy role includes monitoring grades, working as a liaison between the students and the teachers, goal setting, facilitating informal and formal meetings with the students, assisting in the college admission’s process, facilitating AP study groups, coordinating college visits and other enrichment opportunities.

I give these students the tools to advocate for themselves and to not use excuses as barriers to their success.

Because only 18% of our black students passed the state math test, we are going to have a single race class next semester. I will collaborate with a math teacher. She will do the math instruction and I will be there to look at everything through the lens of equity. I will be there for the relationship building, classroom management, checking for understanding, etc.

Kudos to my principal for taking this courageous step. We keep doing the same things year after year and we expect different results. We have to think way outside the box when it comes to eliminating the achievement gap.

Lee Ann Stephens is the Minnesota State Teacher of the Year 2007 and has been an educator for 23 years. She spent her first 12 years of teaching in the Minneapolis Public Schools and the remainder in the St. Louis Park Schools and has taught grades one, five and six.

A few of her roles have included Literacy Coordinator, Gifted/Talented Specialist, English Language Arts Specialist and Dean of Students.  Stephens holds a B.A. in International Studies from Miami University, a B.S. in Elementary Education from University of Minnesota, and a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Minnesota.  She is currently pursuing an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from Bethel University.
