NNSTOY supports Teach to Lead Initiative

Categories: Uncategorized

Washington, DC – On Friday, March 14, 2014, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan introduced the ”Teach to Lead Initiative” at the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards’ (NBPTS) national Teaching & Learning 2014 Conference, of which the National Network of State Teachers of the Year (NNSTOY) is an original supporter.

In his plenary session, Secretary Duncan announced that he will partner with NBPTS to lead this new initiative that is devoted to increasing diverse teacher leadership opportunities that encourage teachers to stay in their classrooms.

NNSTOY, as an organization of teachers leading in policy, practice, and advocacy, is an enthusiastic supporter of the initiative. Our white paper, Re-Imagining Teaching: Five Structures to Transform the Profession(PDF), outlines a similar vision. NNSTOY is eager to join this work, bringing to it the invaluable experiences and voices of our teacher leaders, State and National Teachers of the Year and is grateful to USED and NBPTS for initiating it.

About the National Network of State Teachers of the Year (NNSTOY)

The National Network of State Teachers of the Year (NNSTOY) is a non-profit organization serving as a professional home to State Teachers of the Year (STOYs) in what we call their years of service, following their Year of Recognition when they serve as their State STOY. Our focus is on providing active and meaningful roles for our members, in furthering great teaching and strengthening student learning. We do this through three critical vehicles:  policy, practice, and advocacy. You can find us on the web at:  nnstoy.org.
