A new public opinion survey commissioned by pro-Common Core group The Collaborative for Student Success finds that the majority registered voters nationwide are supportive of the standards and supportive of politicians willing to implement the standards.

The survey, conducted by the Tarrance Group and David Binder Research, finds 64 percent of respondents support the Common Core after hearing the following sentence: “To ensure that all students are prepared for success after graduation, the Common Core Standards establish a set of clear, consistent guidelines for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level across subjects.”

More than 80 percent of respondents nationally believe the standards encourage real understanding of math and English language concepts. More than 70 percent said the standards allow teachers to focus on topics more in depth.

Sixty percent of respondents, who included 1,000 people nationwide, said they would back a candidate that supported the implementation of the Common Core. The majority of voters in Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio also support the standards, the survey says.
